ONE WEEK AFTER BEING HIT BY A CAR!
Joey, a bichon-westie mix, was hit by a car and a passerby took him to a county shelter. He had x-rays taken that detected multiple broken bones in his pelvis. He also had serious injuries to his tail. Joey was in the shelter for 5 days (with no pain medication administered!) waiting for his family to claim him. They didn't, and we got him out only hours before he would have been euthanized. |
LOOK AT JOEY NOW!!!
Look at that face .... impossible to resist! And with a personality to match! Once his bones healed, all Joey wanted was to play, play, play. After that, he wants to cuddle up next to you & snuggle, until it is time to play again!
Joey is housebroken, neutered, up-to-date on all shots, and microchipped. We estimate his age is between 1-2 years. He has gotten along well with every dog and human he has met over the past few months. Joey is a true gem! |

JOEY HAS A NEW FAMILY!!!
Here is Joey (on the right) in his new home with sister, Sassy! Joey also lives with two cats as well as his hu-Mom and hu-Dad. It took Joey's new family no time to fall in love with him! We aren't surprised about that .... he is one funny and loving little boy! |

SWEET CECE!
CeCe lived with the same family for 12 years, but for the last two she was kept crated in the garage at least 10 hours at a time and had to sleep there at night. The poor girl was so scared she would bark, but no one came to comfort her.
Despite being treated like this, CeCe is a kind, gentle and loving dog. She is good around other dogs. She is a little shy at first, probably because she spent so much time crated and isolated from people. CeCe is quite lively for 12 years old -- very playful and loves to go for a long walk or two. She has a cataract in one eye but her vision is still good. She gets a kick out of playing fetch and will even "roll over" for treats!
CeCe is almost ready to go to an adoptive home. She needs to finish her antibiotics and have final bloodwork done. We are looking for someone willing to share their home and heart with a sweet, older dog who didn't deserve to be treated the way she was during her golden years.
|
CECE UPDATE!
CeCe has been adopted by the parents of one of our volunteers! She is being doted on and spoiled to bits ... just as she deserves to be! She is enjoying the comforts of sleeping in bed with her new owners, instead of her old life where she was forced to sleep in a dark and scary garage!

SWEET SASSY!
Sassy is a sweet 10-year old girl who is in need of a forever home. She is being given up due to her current owners' health issues.
Sassy is up to date on shots. Although she does not have cataracts, she does have what are called "aging eyes". Sassy has had bladder stones in the past so she is fed a prescription diet.
This energetic girl with a sweet disposition (and used to being around children) deserves a wonderful home for the rest of her years. Will it be yours???

SASSY UPDATE
Sassy is now the spoiled princess in her new forever home, getting and giving lots of love!

LOUIE
|
|
| The top photo was taken when Louie first arrived. The bottom photo was taken just two weeks later. See how nicely his hair is growing back in on his face and ears! |
Again, the top photo was taken when Louie was first brought into Rescue. He had essentially no hair on his ears and legs, which were also all red from being licked. Now that he is on a better diet and being cared for, he is rarely licking so his hair is growing back in and the redness on his legs is going away! He is starting to look more bichonly every day!
One thing he has always had is the wonderful bichon temperament! |
LOUIE UPDATE
Louie now lives in Washington, DC with his new family. He is happy and cherished ....
just the way it is supposed to be!

BAILEY
Bailey is just over 2 years old but has already lived in two or three homes. Yet he still has an endearing personality and will follow you from room to room, hoping you will give him a treat, play with him or let him snuggle with you. His last home had an electric fence and the charge was set too high. That is why there are sores on the side of his face. Unfortunately, his hu-Mom nor his vet at that time recognized the cause of the problem, attributing it to other things (which were NOT his problem). So the electric fence collar stayed on him and continued to overzap his face. He is now being treated for the infection and no longer wears that #$@# collar! We were told that Bailey is afraid of men, but we haven't seen it. He has no problem with his foster dad (and foster mom). We "think" Bailey is a bichon-Cavalier King Charles blend, but he could be a blend with another breed. What we DO know is that he is cute, sweet
and deserves a loving home!
UPDATE
Bailey now lives in Virginia and gets to go to work
every day with his hu-Mom! Lucky boy!!! |
BARNEY
Barney is a sweet but timid boy, and oh-so-cute! He backs away from men and isn't too sure of strangers, but is not aggressive -- just a bit scared. He will quietly follow you around but is overshadowed by his littermate, Bailey, who is the social one of the pair. Barney will be in a foster home that is separate from Bailey so we can develop his confidence and let his personality shine through! Like Bailey, there are sores on the side of his face from the invisible fence collar he wore at his last home. He was being "overzapped", which caused the sores. He is now being treated to heal those sores, as well as for an ear infection. We "think" Barney is a bichon-Cavalier King Charles blend, but it could have been a blend with a different breed. We DO know that Barney is adorable (tho' he needs a bit of a diet), and deserves a home that will love him and give him the confidence and security to grow to be the fun-loving boy that is inside of him!
UPDATE
Barney has been adopted by his foster family. The human and doggy members of the family fell so in love with him that they just couldn't let him go. They promised that they will not "fail" fostering the next time! :-)

PREGO HAS SPECIAL NEEDS
This 13 year old retired therapy dog needs a special home to love and care for him. His last owner developed medical problems and was unable to let him outside when he needed to go, so Prego resorted to urinating in the house. He has been in a foster home the past 3 months and she has been working on retraining him to potty outside. Prego does well MOST of the time. Although he has never pooped in his foster home, he has lifted his leg once in a while ... so Prego wears a bellyband to protect the carpet and furniture when he is indoors. Bellybands are simple to use and do not bother the dog at all. They are lifesavers to those of us in Rescue who have many different dogs in and out of our homes. The bellybands his Foster Mom made for Prego will go to his new home with him.
Other than this small inconvenience, Prego is a marvelous dog! He likes to watch TV, plays and is crate trained. At 13 his eyesight and hearing are a little diminished and he has arthritis, but he takes a natural supplement that makes a world of difference for him. His current foster mother would love to adopt him, but she already has 5 dogs of her own PLUS fosters, so she just cannot adopt another at this time.
UPDATE
Prego now has a new forever home after being adopted by one of our foster families! It was instant mutual love! |

MADDY - "BEFORE"
Maddy, a little over 4 years young, was taken to the local shelter
when her mother had no time to care for her. As you can see above,
she was horribly matted. In fact, she was never brushed or groomed!
She also had never been to a veterinarian, but her extensive physical
exam and tests showed she was healthy except for very ugly teeth.
After a dental cleaning, her teeth are white and her breath is fresh!
Which is great, because this affectionate little girl loves to give kisses.
You can see Maddy's sweet personality in her "Before" picture,
taken at the shelter.
Look at her smile and see how she is dancing in the picture!
|
MADDY - "AFTER"
This is Maddy after she was cut down to remove all of her matted hair. She weighed only a little over 12 lbs when we got her from the shelter, but went down to just over 10 lbs after her hair was cut off! Yes ... she lost almost 2 lbs of matted hair!!!
She is a beauty and her hair is growing back in.
She will soon look "bichonly" again! .
Maddy is to gain a pound or two ... a change from so many dogs that need to lose weight!
Maddy loves to play with whatever toy she can get her paws on, and is happy to take her favorite toy on her walks.
She is mostly housebroken, but of course Maddy will have
to get acclimated to her new home.

UPDATE
Maddy is now living with and being loved by
her new family! Look at how gorgeous she is!

Fluffers came into Rescue when his owner could no longer care for him. Having had bladder stone surgery two years ago, he needed a family who would commit to keeping him on a special prescription diet to try to prevent a reoccurrence of calcium oxalate stones.
Fluffers is now living and loving his new family ....
who got not only a sweet 6 1/2 yr old boy, but one
who already has his Canine Good Citizen Award from the AKC!

especially at night.

BARELY MOVING!
Buddy III came into Rescue after spending most of his days tied up in a backyard. As you can see, he was morbidly obese when he arrived. He was also heartworm positive, had bad teeth problems plus a few other medical issues. |
CATCH ME NOW!!!
Buddy III, now called Sam, in his new home!
He lost over 10 pounds and is oh so handsome!!!
Buddy III/Sam doesn't even look like the same dog! |

ANOTHER HAPPY FAMILY!!!
Here is Sam (on the right) with his new bichon sister, Abra (who just loves
to clean Sam's ears!). He also has a human sister, hu-Mom and hu-Dad,
and they ALL adore this incredibly sweet boy!

Meet Dusty...
People have been asking to see pictures of Dusty, the puppy brought into MD Bichon Frise Rescue in February 2006 when he was five months old. Only days later Dusty became critically ill with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). He (along with his devoted veterinarians) truly fought for his life! All of the emails received from people sending prayers, well-wishes, and hopes for Dusty's full recovery have been greatly appreciated!

Dusty - February 2006 |
Dusty (now Cody) - May 2006 |
Dusty Update ...
Against all odds, Dusty (now named Cody) fought for his life and appears to have won the battle! After approximately 6 weeks of treatments, Cody finally started to show signs of improvement. Just at the point where we thought he was on a continual upward path, he did have a minor (but thankfully short) setback. Since then, he has continued to improve and his "critical numbers" have been registering within normal ranges in recent weeks. He now has check-ups and tests only 1-2 times per month (instead of weekly), and has been taken off all of the medications.
It has been over 5 months since Cody first "crashed". Looking at him you would never know he has been ill. He loves to play with his bichon brothers and sister in his foster home. With all he has been through, he still loves his kind and most caring doctors at Kingsbrook Animal Hospital, and gives them kisses while wildly wagging his tail as they do his ongoing blood tests and other examinations.
Your supportive emails, donations and concerns about Dusty/Cody over the past few months have been helpful and uplifting! Also greatly appreciated are the Bichon Boutique orders placed during this time, since 100% of the profits help pay medical expenses of bichons like Dusty/Cody and all of the other wonderful bichons that come into our Rescue organization.
